How to Make Easy Mulled Wine in Minutes

Easy 3-Ingredient Mulled Wine (a.k.a. Glühwein)

You’ve probably heard the buzz about Glühwein or Mulled Wine—maybe from friends reminiscing about après ski adventures, or after wandering through a few magical European Christmas markets. That warm, spiced “glow wine” feeling is something special. But recreating it at home? It can feel a bit tricky—especially if you don’t fancy yourself a gourmet chef.

That’s why we’ve created the easiest mulled wine recipe you’ll ever find—and it only takes three ingredients.

What is Glühwein—and how do you say it?

Mulled wine, or spiced wine, is a warm, comforting drink typically made with red wine, aromatic spices, and fruit like oranges or raisins. It’s usually served hot and is alcoholic (though non-alcoholic versions exist too).

“Glühwein” is the German word for mulled wine—it literally means “glow wine.” (You might also hear it called “Gløgg” in Scandinavia.) Fun fact: if you're a Frozen fan, this is the same drink Prince Hans offers in the Great Hall to keep Arendelle’s townspeople warm.

To pronounce “Glühwein,” just say “glue” and “vine.”

Why Red Elk's Glühwein Syrup Makes It So Easy

With Red Elk’s Glühwein Mulled Wine Syrup, the spices are already perfectly blended and ready to go. All you need to do is add wine, a bit of water, heat—and enjoy. No complicated prep, no spice hunting—just cosy, festive goodness in minutes.

The 3-Ingredient Recipe

Note: This recipe is based on ratios, so you can easily scale it for one glass or a big batch for a party.
For example, if you’re making a 300ml drink using the 1:4:1 ratio, one part = 50ml.

Ingredients

Red Elk Glühwein Mulled Wine Syrup

Red wine (something inexpensive like a Merlot or Shiraz works perfectly)

Water

Optional garnishes: sliced apple, orange peel, star anise, or cinnamon sticks

Method

1. In a heatproof jug, combine 1 part syrup, 4 parts red wine, and 1 part water.

2. Heat in the microwave until warm (ideal temp is 65–70°C).Tip: Don’t boil it or you’ll lose the alcohol!

3. Pour into a mug or glass and garnish if you like.

A Few Extra Tips...

Warm your mug or glass first with hot water so your drink stays warmer for longer.

Entertaining? Use a slow cooker!

Mix the recipe in the slow cooker and set to HIGH for 30 minutes. Then switch to KEEP WARM and let guests serve themselves.

Alternatively, heat in the microwave first, then transfer to the slow cooker on KEEP WARM.
